So, you have decided you want to become a registered nurse. But, the most important part after you have decided to become a nurse is finding the right nursing program for you. If you have a bachelor’s degree in a non-nursing subject, the ABSN program could be an appropriate option for you.
Accelerated Bachelor of Science in nursing, in short ABSN, is a quick way to leverage your non-nursing college experience, basically 60 credits to earn a B.S. degree in Nursing in just 16 months. How quick can you begin depends on what knowledge you have or courses you have taken previously. You may have to take more general education classes and fulfill some of the prerequisites before a university accepts you into their ABSN program.
Students who are interested to pursue the Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing program are required to possess a Bachelor’s degree in the non-nursing field or at least 54 credit points in the below-mentioned courses. You must have a Bachelor’s degree from a nationally or regionally accredited post-secondary institution.
If you have a degree from outside of the US, Josef Silny and Associates or World Evaluation Services will evaluate your degree. The evaluation confirms that you have graduated from a university or institution outside the USA which is equivalent to a nationally or regionally accredited institution in the US.
The College of Nursing has a set of prerequisites that need to be completed before you can enroll in an ABSN program. The applicants should at least get a “C” grade and GPA of 2.75 cumulatively or more than that in these courses.
If you don’t have a bachelor’s degree
The science-related courses must be completed within 10 years from the current year or the year when you are going to enroll in the ABSN program. Because so much has changed and keeps on changing in the field of science and nursing over the past one decade, the universities want every applicant who enters the program is on a level to grasp the growing needs quickly. Since the course is of shorter duration, an updated understating of science is also required.
Based on your previous degree and grades, you may have already fulfilled some of these prerequisites and ABSN requirements. Ask your admission counselor to know if you have any eligible past credits that can be transferred.
While you can pursue any of these ABSN prerequisite courses from the university where you are planning to join the program, course credits from an outside institution that align with the university’s requirements will also be accepted.
If you have more questions about credit score transfer, Test of Essential Academic Skills or the preadmission test, get in touch with a university admissions counselor.
